The cultivation of Volvariella volvacea strains on banana crop wastes and barley
straw was studied for the obtaining of its fructifications under rustic conditions. Firstly, the
mycelial growth in vitro of five strains of V. volvacea was evaluated in fresh and degraded
pseudostem of banana, leaves of banana and barley straw. The strains IE-653 and IE-106
presented the greatest mycelial areas on degraded pseudostem of banana and barley straw,
2 reaching averages between 62.9 and 60.1 cm at 6 days of incubation. In production stage, a
good mycelial growth on both strains was observed, although only IE-653 strain developed
basidiomes, reaching biological efficiencies average of 25.6% on barley straw and 19.5% on
pseudostem of banana. The results of the study demonstrated the feasibility of the cultivation
of V. volvacea under rustic conditions in the tropical and subtropical areas of Mexico.
