Abstract

The potential cultivation of edible fungí in México is discussed. The results of
Mexican Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq. ex Fr.) Kumm. and Volvanella bakeri (Murr.) Shaffer
strains cultures are presented. P. ostreatus grows very well on fresh coffee pulp reaching
a biological efficiency of 113.35%. The degraded pulp through fungal activity may be
used later as cattle feed. Moreover, preliminary results of P. ostreatus cultivation on other
wastes, such as paper, sugarcane bagaze and stubble corn are also discussed. Finally,
some characteristics of the Mexican Volvanella baken strains are given.
