Metarhizium anisolpiae (METSCH.) SOROKIN application as a bioinsecticide against the spittlebug (HOMOPTERA: CERCOPIDAE) in cattle pastures in Guatemala

The
entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium gnisopliae was applied as a bioinsecticide to cattle pastures from Suchitepéquez,
Guatemala. Two áreas (7 ha, each) were studied, one treated with 1.4 x 1012 conidia/ha of the fungus, weekly during four
weeks, and the other without treatment as the non-applied control. Initially and weekly, spittlebug (Homoptera:
Cercopidae) nymphs were registered per square meter, in ten m2 in both áreas, at random, and results reponed as the
mean of nymphs/m2. The cattle pasture which received the bioinsecticide showed a reduction from 45.7 to 1.2
nymphs/m2 at the end of the treatment, while the control área remained with 46.3 nymphs/m2 after five weeks of the
study. Statistical analysis showed significant differences of insect density between the treated and the control áreas, from
the third week on (P<0.05). M. anisopliae was capable of controlling this insect/plague in cattle pastures, and represents
an alternative to pollution by chemical insecticides
