Abstract

Towards the object of knowing the frequency of lung mycosis in hospitalized patients. 50 patients who had
symptoms suggestive of mycosis of the lungs, were selected. A series of three direct examinations and culture were
taken from the sputum. In 13 patients (26.53%), mycosis was diagnosed by means of laboratory study (di rect
microscopic examination and culture). Five were diagnosed as havi ng candidiasis, three with <~ spergillosi s . three
with coccidioidomycosis, and two with paracoccidioidomycosis. The principal diseases associated with this mycosis
were: tuberculosis -5 cases. diabetes -3 cases, and carcinoma of the lung-2 cases. The hospitalization time of the
cases of lung mycosis was 6S days on the average, considerably more than the 16 days recorded as a total for
patients residing in the hospital in study. The clinical importance of the lung n1ycosis, as well as the high frequency
found when an intecional search is made, is discussed.
