Abstract

Ten Mexican strains of Pleurotus ostreatus, isolated from specimens growing
on different substrates in Xalapa region, Veracruz, were cultivated on coffee pulp
and barley straw. Strains showed variation in fresh fruiting body production and
biological efficiency on each substrate. Highest biological efficiencies were
obtained for strain INIREB-21 (138.13 %) on coffee pulp, and for strain INIREB-26
(96.04 %) on barley straw. Time to produce the first fruiting body primordia and
that for fruiting body development were mostly earlier on barley s traw than on
coffee pulp.
