Abstract

In order to study dermatophytosis in adults, 488 cases were studied, 312
(63.93°fo ) men and 176 (36.07%) women. The most affected corporal regions
were toe nails (42.21%), feet (30.12%) and groin ·(13.12%). In the
majority of cases the diagnosis was made by direct examination as well as
by culture (66.19%); 26.23% only by direct examination and 7.58 OJo, only
by culture. The most frequent species were Trichophyton rubrum
(78.85"/o), T. mentagrophytes (8.52°fo), Microsporum canis (4.95%) and
Epidermophyton jloccosum (4.12"/o). The progressive frequency increase of
T. rubrum is discussed, as well as the disminution ofT. tonsurans
