Abstract

A laboratory soil-block decay test was carried out to assess the aggressiveness of
eight isolates of Fomitopsis pinicola and one of Heterobasidion annosum, against heartwood
of Mexican-fir (Abies religiosa). This assay was part of a diagnosis about decay problems in
Mexican-fir standing trees at the Nevado de Toluca National Park, State of Mexico. Results
showed a very different decay capacity in the two species. Out of seven native isolates of F.
pinicola, two were highly aggressive and four were very aggressive. Another native isolate and
a foreign strain were moderately aggressive. The only isolate tested of H. annosum was slightly
aggressive. Activity variation among isolates is analyzed. Fundamentals of testing and
approach to Koch's Postulates are discussed. Control measures for these wood-decay fungi of
forest relevance are recommended.
