Abstract

The development of l Mexican and 2 for eign s trains of Pleurotus ostreatus
(Jacq. ex Fr.) Kumm. was studied in malt extract agar at 28° C, using 11 different
concentrations of caffeine from 0.001 to 2 .00 mg/ml . Intrastock matings of
compatible monokaryons from 2 Mexican strains and l foreign strain were also
studied, under the same condit ions. The average growth rate was slightly stimulated
in 0.001-0.06 mg/ml of caffeine concentrations in comparison with the control.
However, mycelial growth rate was lower or completely inhibited a t 0.250-2.00 mg/ml
of caffeine concentration. Caffeine did not affect intrastock matings . These
result s suggest that caffeine is not assimilated by Pleurotus mycelium
