Abstract

Chit inase activity was demonstrated in the cytosol , a mixed
mem brane fraction and in the cell wall fraction from mycelium of !L
~· In all cases , chitinolytic activity was much more effe ctive
against nascent chitin than against preformed chitin. Results
showed that loss of chitin biosynthesis upon incubation of a mixed
membrane fraction at 28" C was not due to ai increased
depolimerization of the nascent polymer by endogenous chitinases.
Incubation with digitonin extracted chitinase activity from cell
walls but not from the mixed membrane fraction. The physiological
implications of distribution of chitinase in different subcellular
fractions of mycelial cells of ~ ~ remains to be
established.
