Degradation of ß-sitosterol by lignivorous basidiomycetes in liquid culture and their relation with the extracellular ligninolytic enzyme production

Abstract

The degradation of ß-sitosterol, a model compound of Eucalyptus globulus wood
extractives and the “pitch” deposits from paper mills, by different lignivorous basidiomycetes
in liquid culture and the ligninolytic enzyme activity related, was analyzed. While
Bjerkandera adusta and Coriolopsis rigida transformed all ß-sitosterol (200 μM)
supplemented to culture after 5 days of incubation, Phlebia radiata, Pleurotus pulmonarius
and Poria subvermispora transformed it in percentages lower than 50 % after same time
interval. Except C. rigida, the strains used showed extracellular ligninolytic enzyme activity in
liquid cultures supplemented with ß-sitosterol.
