Abstract

The use of white-rot mushrooms has become a promising alternative for the
treatment of coloured wastewaters and the degradation of dyes. In the following research a
study was made for the selection of Pleurotus ostreatus strains for the treatment of coloured
effluents, for which a screening method was used based on parameters such as the growth
rate at room temperature and in media supply with dyes and coloured wastewaters. The
decolorization of vinasse and aqueous extract of the coffee pulp was assayed in submerged
fermentation with agitation using different strains. In both wastewaters, colour removals
higher than 50 % were achieved employing the P. ostreatus selected strains
