different brands purchased in retail stores located in Hermosillo. Sonora were analyzed to determmc the contents of
aflatoxin M1 (AFMI)· The AFM1 was isolated by antibody affinity columns and qua ntified using " nuorometric
technique. In the range of0.05 to 0.5 11g/kg a 97% recovery was obtained with a detection limit ofO.OS 11g/l<g. The
average AFM 1 content ranged from 0.13 ± 0.01 to 0 .2 ± 0.07 11g/l<g in dry mill< powder and 0. 13 :!: 0.07 to 0 .27 :!:
0.12 11g/kg in fluid mill<. High le\'els of AFM1 were found in both dry milk powder and fluid milk samplcs. tUl
and 0.49 IJ.g/l<g respectively. The majority of the samples, 76%. had levels of AFM 1 < 0.2 J.lg/kg and 24% of the
samples varied from 0.2 to 0.5 11g/kg. None of the samples exceeded the maximum level of 0.5 ).lg!kg permitted by
FDA.
