Abstract

This paper presents a study conducted in five maize field i n the
State of Morelos, Mexico, to determine quantity and effectiveness of the nati
ve vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (VAM) . Number of spores and pr opagules
(most probabl e number) were counted. The effectiveness of the VAM fungi
populations on the growth of the two species with different mycorrhizal dependence,
Zea mays and Leucaena leucocephala, was tested . In some cases , the nat!
ve VAM populations slightly enhanced growth of the two plant species assayed ,
despite the high level of available phosphorus in all the soils. The most important
factor that influenced the abundance of these fungi, was the soil man~
gement , finding a smaller number of propagules of VAM fungi in those fields
with mecanized tillage and no r otation or rotation with plants with lower myc£
trophic capacity .
