Abstract

Rhynchosporium secalis, the causal fungus ofbarley leaf blotch is mainly a
stubble-borne, droplet dispersed disease which can survive a 'break' year on
¡nfected stubble, providing a source of ¡nfection when a susceptible crop is sown
again. This study was realized ¡n England ¡n 1977 and the importance of stubble
debris was examined as a source of primary infection. It was concluded that one
¡nfected straw per 20 m2 of bariey crop is sufficient to provide an infection focus
from which the disease may rapidly spread if favourable climatic conditions prevail.
