Cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus on leaves used by the essential oil industry

The extraction of volatile essential oils from the leaves of diverse plants, ¡s
an important economical industry all over the world, mainly in tropical and
subtropical regions. In this industry, many plant residuos such as leaves of lemon
grass (Cymbopogon citratus), cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), and pepper
(Pipper nigrum) are discarded and such materials were studied for the Pleurotus
ostreatus cultivation. The materials were obtained from the experimental plant for
the extraction of essential oils at INIREB. Good yields of mushrooms can be
obtained on such substratos. On lemon grass, P. ostreatus reached a biológica!
efficiency of 113.01 %, while on cinnamon 81.85%, and pepper 56.79%.
