General panorama of Entomophthorales fungi for the biological control of the spittlebug in Mexico

Abstract

Since 1876, Mexico has been plagued by succesivc infestations by the
insects Aeneolamia albofasciata and Prosapia SJ·mulans commonly known
as spittlebug. Destruction of cattle pastures as well as corn and rice plantations
provoke economic losses in the agricultural sector of the country.
An alternative for controlling the spittlebug could probably be the use
of Entomophthorales fungi as biological insecticides. In Latin America, few
studies have been made concerning these microorganisms, although Mexico
has been realizing a research program with the objective of studying these
fungi that could contribute to the control of this pest. Studies have been
developed concerning the inocuity of these microorganisms in research
animals as well as physiological studieS to detem1ine the ideal conditions
for the development, growth and production of biomass at laboratory level.
This in addition to research in sporulation and gennination allow setting of
guide-lines for the production of a fungal insecticide. Due to the taxonomic
difficulties involved, work is also going on with regard to the inmunological
identi fication of Entomophthorales. This work presents a general panora-.
ma concerning the spittlebug in Mexico plus the diverse investigations in the
UNAM with regard to the fungal strains which could serve as biological competitors
to combat this problem.
