DOI:

An epidemic of aflatoxicosis and pulmonar aspergillosis was recently observed in
poultry farms on difieren! regions of Guatemala. A study wasperformed to detect
the importance of the problem. Eight poultry farms with an average of 60,000
chicken per farm, were studied during one year Samples were obtained from the
roosting environment, beds and concéntrales to determine the presence of AspergiUus
flavus and aflatoxins. This fungus was found m 50°/o of the poultry farms beds and
in 100°/o of the farms environment. Nevertheless, no A. flavus ñor aflatoxins were
found in the poultry c encéntrales. A preventive method for this type of problems is
recommended: a fumigation program.-galleries (roosting área) rotation, rapid detection
of the etiologic agent and special training of the farm workers.
