Abstract

The objective of the present survey was to confirm the taxonomic position of several
Mexican collections oí Amonita verna and establish their toxicity. Presence of amanotoxins
was used as a taxonomic marker. Results obtained by means of chromatographic
analysis and bioassay revealed that toxic properties of Mexican samples of A. vema
displayed similar behavior to that showed by fungi from Europe and the United States.
We found that significan! variability in toxic effects of each sample was present, as previously
reponed for species in the phalloides group. (A. phalloides, A. bisporigera, A. verna,
A. virosa). In this case, we found a range from non-toxicity to true toxicity in different
samples of A. verna.
