Abstract

Taking into account the importance of microorganisms in the degradation of dung
from diverse animáis, the development in succession of a variety of fungí in dung, and
the scarcity of reports for México on fungi found in such a substrate, the present work
was carried out with the purpose of studying the mycofloral succession that takes place
during the degradation of cow dung.
The samples of dung studied were obtained directly from a stable in Xochimilco,
México, D. F., taken to the laboratory and maintained in moist chambers for two
months in order to observe and identify the fungi that appeared.
The species of fungi found were Pilobolus aystallinus, P. longipes (Mucorales); Podospora
cómala and Sardana fimicola (Xylariales); Ascobolus michaudii, A. scatigenus, Ascophanus
cameus, Saccobolus depauperatus, and S. trúncalas (Pezizales); Caprinas lagopus, C. scleroligenus,
and Coprinus spp. (Agaricales).
During the first month bacteria belonging to the Actinomycetales and Myxobacterales
appeared; as ft*r the above fungi, the Mucorales appeared first, followed by the Pezizales
and Xylariales, and finally the Agaricales. In the second month only more fruting
bodies of the same Pezizales, Xylariales, and Agaricales appeared.
This paper presents illustrations and brief descriptions of the fungi found, most of
them cited for the first time for México.
