Abstract

A new habitat and locality of Psilocybe muliercula Singer & - Smith (= _P. wassonii Heim) is described. The species was found near San Francisco Oxtotilpan, State of Mexico, a village situated on the road from Toluca to Temascaltepec, in the NW of the Nevado de Toluca región. The Matlatzinca indians of this región consider the fungus as sacred and call it "santito" in Spanish or "netochhutáta" in Matlatzinca. P. muliercula grows on the vertical walls of the Rio Verde stream, between tilled land surrounded by Pinus forests, at 2600-2800 m altitud. Differences and similarities between this habitat and that reported by Guzmán (1958) are discussed.
