Abstract

Cell walls from the sporangiophore oí Phycomyces blakesleanus were isolated
after mechanical breakage. Cell walls were purified by repeated washings with
NaCl and water. Chemical annlysis rcvealcd n complcx composition of the ccll
wall. Chitin, identified by X-ray diffraction, was the most abundant component.
Polyuronidcs and chitosan were present also in Inrge amounts. Chitosan was
identified by cytochemical reactions and by its solubility in acid. Cell walls contained
also proteins, lipids, phosphate and four neutral sugars: fucose, galactose,
glucose and mannose in'orden of abundante.
