Background: The first catalog related to the type specimens of fungi deposited in the Herbarium CR was published in 2002 by Ruiz-Boyer and González-Ball as part of the paper entitled “Colección Tipo del Herbario Nacional de Costa Rica (CR). II. Fungi, Lichenes, Bryophyta y Pteridophyta”, whereby 17 species were recorded.
Objective: To compile, update, and make available to the scientific community the information associated with the type specimens of fungi located up to now in the Herbarium CR.
Methods: The information for this paper was obtained from the labels associated with the types specimens deposited in the Herbarium CR, that was complemented with the protologues, whenever it was possible to consult the original description of a given species, also from the online database “Index Fungorum” and from the database of the National Herbarium of Costa Rica.
Results and conclusions: A total of 99 type specimens of fungi, which constitute the nomenclatural reference of 89 taxa, are deposited so far in the Herbarium CR. The revised specimens were grouped into four categories: holotypes (65 specimens), isotypes (23), paratypes (10), and types (1). These specimens contribute to the knowledge about new species of fungi for the science from Costa Rica.
